Created in 1998, Windfall Ecology Centre is a non-profit social enterprise dedicated to building sustainable communities. The creation of Windfall was inspired by a vision of healthy communities, where economic, social, and environmental needs achieve balance through social innovation, community partnership, and community action. Windfall’s membership is supported by the City of Vaughan, making Vaughan the first municipality in York Region to support the development of a target-based sustainability program. Niagara Sustainability Initiative (NSI) is a non-profit organization focused on improving environmental and economic performance in the Niagara Region. To facilitate this NSI runs a program called the Carbon Project designed to aid organizations in measuring managing and reducing their carbon footprint. There are currently 20 Carbon Project partners. NSI also hosts a number of educational events throughout the year in order to engage partners and community members in environmental sustainability principles and practices. Sustainable Waterloo Region (SWR) is a non-profit organization fostering collaborations that enable local organizations to convert their sustainability interest into action. SWR’s flagship program, the Regional Carbon Initiative, has now grown to 65 member organizations representing 15% of Waterloo Region’s workforce. These organizations have collectively committed to reducing 53,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the next 10 years (like taking 10,000 cars off the road each year).
